Rituals of Spring 2.21.24

Living in Cleveland Ohio in the winter can be dark and dreary. We often have many clouds and unpredictable weather that results in one day rain and the next 3 ft of snow! The sunshine when it appears is gorgeous and brilliant. It is welcome when we have seen back-to-back dark days. One thing I most appreciate about winter is that it allows me to slow down and rest. It is the time of going within and hibernation. I take my dreams and ideas into the dark of winter and let them rest. I allow the ideas to be fed like a sourdough starter…attended to but also left alone so the bubbles can erupt into a beautiful creation.

Springtime is full of wonderful fragrances, brightly colored flowers, sunlight, bird song, and the feeling that anything is possible. Finding time to absorb the freshness of life can be challenging but I like to create rituals so I can become more present in each day. I want to be consciously creating my life. Creating rituals connects me to what feels important and elevates every day into something sacred.

Some of the rituals that I practice include:

  • mindful walking each day with my dog, greeting the trees and plants as they begin to wake up from the long winter, standing in the sunlight (or snow, or cold)

  • meditation (if not outside) facing a window and practicing 4 square breathing

  • listening to music and preparing food for dinner from fresh ingredients

  • my morning prayer ritual

These practices create focus and mindfulness which gives fuel to action! I am not always excited by what is going on in my life but I know I can rely on the rituals that help me stay centered and be the person I want to be. Finding your rituals can be a wonderful investigation and experiment.
